Tall, Dark & Dead

Tate Hallaway

Published 2006    295 pages

Synopsis

Garnet Lacey is a witch with a secret (several secrets actually) the main ones being that she is in hiding from Vatican witch hunters and she is channeling Lilith (a highly destructive Goddess) who has taken up residence inside Garnet.

When the yummy Sebastian Von Traum enters her life it looks like her luck might be changing for the better, apart from on closer inspection he has no aura and which is a sure sign that he’s dead.  With her long-lost vampire ex-boyfriend turning up out of the blue, Sebastian’s dhampyr son, Lilith and the Vatican witch hunters hot on her trail her luck certainly needs to change for the better!

The Review

Written in first person from Garnet’s point of view, this is a lightly comic piece of romantic fluff.  (I mean that in a good way because I like romantic fluff!)

I think one of the best parts of the book is when Garnet goes for a coffee with Sebastian and then spends all the time trying to work out exactly what kind of supernatural being he is.  (I'm not giving much away when I say he's an unusual kind of vampire!)

There is plenty of action and excitement in the plot provided by the Vatican witch hunters as well as solid romance provided by Garnet and Sebastian.

With plenty of magic and a wide variety of supernatural characters in this romantic fantasy, "Tall, Dark and Dead" is a fast paced read. I devoured the book in two sittings, making it perfect holiday reading. (Or reading for any other time really!)

Editor’s Choice

Soulless by Gail Carriger

I LOVED this book! It takes the best parts of the urban fantasy, romance, mystery and alternative history genres adds a dash of steampunk, wraps it up in a coating of Victorian sensibility and turns it into something more than the sum of its parts. Fabulous! Read the review.
